DESIGNER: Mumo homeware
MUMO is currently a supplier of ethical fabrics to the fashion industry sourced typically from small scale producer groups in Brazil. Products include ecological silk, organic cotton, ecological fish leather and Amazonian latex which are both socially and environmentally sustainable. In an attempt to open up markets further to the communities MUMO supports, in 2010 they will be producing a small capsule homeware collection.
MUMO are looking for a graduate for a 3-month placement to design capsule homeware collection using MUMO ethical fabrics as base materials. The successful candidate will produce prototypes which will be of suitable standard to pre-sell to retail businesses. Production will then follow depending on orders received. The consultancy will take place from early May 2010 through to end July/early August 2010. This will include full design phase and production or prototypes. Consultancy required is 14 hours per week, at a rate of £8 per hour.
Responsibilities:
- Selection of fabric types for prototypes
- Specification of finishing techniques required
- Final design of collection pieces
All of the above will be agreed jointly with MUMO proprietor Kirstin Samuel.
Design concept is to focus on the following:
- Simplicity of colour
- Contrasting but harmonious use of textures
- Bridge gap between artisanal / traditional and contemporary style
- Target mid to high-end European designer market
- Commercial appeal essential
- Simplicity of design favoured
With consideration to the above design criteria, select from the following fabrics and submit a design for 1 cushion: canvas; taffeta silk; gauze silk; fish leather; latex sheets (coloured); cotton fabric of your choice (as the actual cotton to be manufactured has yet to be decided upon).
Sketches are sufficient to pass first stage of application process. Successful candidates will pass to 2nd stage where requirement is to produce the design on fabric provided by MUMO. (not necessary to produce prototype).
Final selection will result in 3-month consultancy with option to extend.
