Workers producing trainers for Adidas earn poverty wages

It was revealed in the Sunday Times (30/3/08) that workers in China producing trainers for the official sponsor of the Olympic games, Adidas, are earning as little as eleven pounds a week. In addition to low wages the workers are suffering discrimination and attempts to start a trade union have been stifled by the factory management. These conditions are in breach of both China's labour law and Adidas's code of conduct.

This news breaks as the Playfair 08 campaign launches its electronic torch relay: Catch the Flame. The relay highlights the need for the Olympics movement to stamp out abuses of labour standards in workplaces making Olympics goods. For more information about the Playfair 08 campaign and to take part in the Catch the Flame relay, go to the Playfair2008 website.
