First anniversary for Estethica

Estethica, the exhibition at London Fashion Week devoted to eco-sustainable fashion, celebrated it's first birthday this month. 25 designers including From Somewhere and People Tree were featured in the exhibition. Events such as Estethica reflect the growing interest in sustainability within the fashion industry but in the same month the Guardian uncovered that workers making clothes for Marks & Spencer, Mothercare and H&M were being paid wages as low as £1.13. This reminds us that although pioneering work is being done we still have so much more to do.

The wages paid to the garment workers fail to meet their basic needs so falls below the minimum international labour standards that the companies have signed up to as members of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). The Guardian also found that garment workers for factories owned by exporters who supply to Gap, Matalan and Primark, were paid similar wages and regularly forced to work overtime of between 6 - 18 hours per week.
