Queensland University of Technology, Australia
Undergraduate(2010) Bachelor of Fine Art (Fashion)
(2010) Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Fine Art (Fashion) double degree
(2010) Bachelor of Fine Art (Fashion) Honours
Students are introduced to ethical and sustainable fashion issues and opportunities from first year onwards. Students from overseas institutes can study at QUT for one semester as an exchange student or study abroad student.
First year students are introduced to the principles of sustainability and ethical design practice through the 13 week long course titled Sustainability: The Materiality of Fashion. In second year they start to explore ethical and sustainable design within their own design practice through the second semester 13 week Design Studio course. In the final year of the degree students develop a major project which enables them to showcase their strengths and prepare for graduation. An increasing number of students are electing to follow an ethical/.sustainable approach to their design practice in this final year project.
KFB104 - Sustainability: The Materiality of Fashion
This first year course introduces students to issues of sustainability throughout the lifecycle of a garment. A common thread in global trends is the need for designers to be critically aware of sustainable issues for the materials they use within their practice. For the fashion industry, textiles form the key building blocks for design realisation and designers require informed decisions about the impact of textiles upon the world. A detailed understanding of textile identification and characteristics, possible dyes and finishes, garment care, and the implications of textiles throughout the entire lifecycle of a product, is essential for contemporary design practitioners. Through this knowledge the course aims to introduce a new paradigm, for both the designer and the consumer - a shift from 'cradle-to-grave' to 'cradle-to-cradle' practices for textile based products.
KFB202 - Design Studio 4 In this second year studio course, students are required to research issues of sustainability relating to the fashion design process and through this research develop an informed personal philosophy of sustainable design practice. Utilizing this research students produce a body of work that explores a more sustainable design/make model of fashion practice. The second phase of the course then asks students, as part of a collaborative team, to present a creative, cohesive and professional response to a fashion design brief relating to issues around sustainability.
