PRESENTATION: Fashion Futures 2025: Global scenarios for a sustainable fashion industry

Vicky Murray

Senior sustainability advisor, Forum for the Future

Abstract: The global fashion industry generates over a trillion dollars a year. So what we wear - and how it's made and sold - can have a huge positive impact on our society and environment. This presentation focuses on a report, produced by Forum for the Future and Levi Strauss & Co., which describes how fashion companies can be successful by becoming sustainable. Four vivid scenarios explore how climate change, resource shortages, population growth and other factors will shape the world of 2025 and the future of the fashion industry within it. They are designed as a tool to challenge companies’ strategies, inspire them with new opportunities and help them plan for the future. You can view animations of the four scenarios and read the full report on the Forum for the Future website.

This paper was presented in the workshop The Changing Face of Ethical Fashion chaired by Dilys Williams (director, Centre for Sustainable Fashion). The other paper in the workshop was The Fallacy of Ethical Fashion by professor Efrat Tseelon (chair of fashion theory, University of Leeds).
