PANEL DISCUSSION: Nieves Ruiz Ramos
Biography: Nieves is the brains behind Bibico, which is based in the British city of Bath and made by a small army of women in India. After receiving her fashion design degree in France, Nieves designed for a whole list of retailers in the UK, Spain and Australia. Nieves became increasingly disgruntled about the negative side effects that came with what has become known as ‘fast fashion.’ Unsafe working conditions for producers, sub standard pay rates and gender inequality were just some of the problems Nieves encountered, which prompted her to quit her job and travel to India to source suppliers and start her own company. Bibico now works with a number of certified fair trade producers and the collection is sold through the company’s website, as well as independent retailers around the world including Topshop Oxford Circus London.
